Her due date was October 3rd. My sweet mother in-law Linda, was able to come weeks ahead of time and help me get the sunroom/birth room clean and ready, as well as love on all the other kids. Then the spawn of sweetness, my sister in-law Misha, was able to be here off and on for over a month! It was so delightful to have her here. She helped more than she realizes and I am so grateful she had the time to spend with us. Leading up to this birth, it was becoming increasingly difficult to be patient. I have always had early deliveries and was anticipating a similar pattern. You can't make plans around a baby's arrival, and the efforts to try were frustrated. We tried so many things to get the labor started while Linda was here. Herbs, oils, teas, three treatments of foot zoning; this girl was not ready to come out. We watched my due date come and go. Linda had to go back to Montana on the 7th. I've never gone over my due date before, and the thought, "I'm just going to be pregnant forever" was beginning to feel imminent.
After the emotional realization that Linda was not going to be able to physically be at the birth, we continued to wait. To make sure all was well with baby girl, we got an ultrasound Monday, October 12th. Everything looked great and healthy. She was acting shy by keeping her hands up by her face the whole time. Luckily she put them down before delivery day came two days later.
It started in my dreams. I dreamt that I had her and remember holding a dark haired girl, only she was smaller like a doll. I woke up to some contractions that finally felt like the real deal. I started timing them around 5 am since sleeping through them wasn't an option anymore. I started texting both Moms, Father in-law, Sisters in-law, and midwife to let me know today was the day. Because I had been convinced I was going to continue to be pregnant forever, there was a lot going on this particular day. Our dog Benga needed to get a lump removed from her eyelid and was scheduled to go into surgery that morning, Evie had broken her wrist the week before during family pictures and needed to go to her follow up appointment to get a cast (which luckily ended up only needing a splint), and since it was Wednesday, Evie and Leelu had piano lessons in the afternoon. I was planning on taking Benga to the vet, but by that time, my contractions were about 3-5 minutes apart and lasting 30-60 seconds. It took lots of texting and coordinating, but at about 9:30 am we had the kids on their way to my friend Alisa's house, Evie set to go to her appointment with Grandpa, and the midwifes on their way. We began filling the birth tub that had been set up in the sunroom, and waited for everyone to come. All who were able to be present included Andrew, my Mom Jeannine, Misha, and two midwifes Desi and Linette. My Mom and Misha were able to take pictures to show the progression of the rest of the labor.
(10:26am breakfast birthing fuel)
After eating some breakfast, I spent some time kneeling on the floor, leaning on an exercise ball. If I was still or laying down, the contractions would come less frequent, but stronger and longer. If I was walking around, they would be more frequent and shorter.
(12:14 pm getting back in the tub from a bathroom break)
I got in the tub maybe around 11:30 am. It was so much more comfortable to be in the tub.
At one point the contractions got really far apart and I was worried it was stalling. I only got out twice to go to the bathroom, but the second attempt was halted by my water breaking at 1:13 pm. I could feel myself starting to bear down and wanted to get back in the tub quickly, but I couldn't move. A sharp pain was preventing me from standing upright, but I was eventually able to shuffle back to the tub. Holding to the side of the tub on my knees, I could feel her moving her way down. Transition was happening and I threw up a few times. As she was crowning, I sat back so I could get verbal ques on when to push that little bit extra. She came out quickly and was brought to my chest at 1:21 pm. The first thing she did was lift her head and look right at me with the sweetest eyes. She was beginning to make us a little nervous as she took 1 minute and 50 seconds to give us a good cry and cleared her lungs out.
This is the first birth where I have any video recordings, which has been kind of cool to see. She is the Sweetest little girl with the most beautiful hair. The whole family is ecstatic she is here and eagerly await their turns to hold her.
